How it started

On a trip to Stockholm in September 2012, I tasted my first serious craft beer. This small event had such a big impact on me because once I got home, I started to research all about craft beer, trying to gather as much knowledge as I could.

This research led me to try to gather as much information about craft beer in Portugal and the amateur brewers that were leading the way for Portugal’s scene.

So in May 2013, I set out to create an editorial project called Cerveja Artesanal Portuguesa (literally, Portuguese Craft Beer) that focused on showcasing portuguese brewers, events, and news about the topic.

The result

Cerveja Artesanal Portuguesa (or CAP), grew with the years and still is the biggest news outlet about portuguese craft beer scene. Despite not having much activity from 2020 due to a lack of time to invest in content creation, the website is visited daily by 100+ users trying to get more information on craft beer.

The website became a place to post news about the portuguese craft beer community like launches, events, and interviews with brewers and people relevant to the industry. Aside from that, Cerveja Artesanal Portuguesa has a living database of all active (and defunct) brewing projects ever to exist in Portugal which is of major importance to new brewers, event managers, and to the overall industry.

Additionally, by being the editor of CAP, I received many requests from home brewers who wanted to understand how they could do their next step to create a de facto craft brewing company which led me to provide some legal advice around this theme.

Today, Cerveja Artesanal Portuguesa is still the most relevant place to be showcased if you want to launch your craft beer brand in Portugal.

Due to its relevancy to the portuguese craft beer community, I’ve been invited to judge homebrewing contests and contributed to the 3rd edition of Pocket Beer Book by Tim Webb and Stephen Beaumont which you can buy from Amazon or your local bookstore.

Despite the low activity I had on the website, thousands of people keep pouring in a year. For 2022, even with zero posts, the website amassed more than 8k page views and 4k different users.
