Jantarada.pt

Helping portuguese hospitality survive through covid-19 pandemic with an index of take-away restaurants.

How it started

Right after the COVID-19 restrictions hit Portugal and our hospitality sector, me and my friends at Bloco felt the need to do whatever we could to help the portuguese restaurants survive.

Many regular restaurants did not do any sort of take-out or delivery. So not only changes were needed to revamp the offering from these restaurants, but they also needed to communicate that they were doing things differently.

Once the restrictions were set, I found out Dine CPH - a platform created by Sebastian Winther with help from Techværnet and Empirical Spirits. This project allowed any hospitality initiative to submit an application saying how they’d be operating given the COVID-19 restrictions, identification, and contacts. This was much easier for the consumer to be aware of - a simple index of all submitted restaurants that were doing things differently to manage through these difficult times.

As the Dine CPH project was open source, we’ve decided to roll our sleeves and create the same project for the whole Portuguese territory.

Result

The website received almost 500 submissions from restaurant owners in a very short period, becoming the platform used by many Michelin-starred places and other relevant restaurants around Portugal to announce the changes to their operations, using jantarada.pt to aggregate information on how to get their food onto our homes.

Now that the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, the project doesn’t make sense anymore. So Jantarada.pt is now disabled. The domain has expired and we don’t plan to use it again. We’re all thankful and grateful to be able to help many different businesses during these hard times and expect a platform in the likes of jantarada.pt won’t be needed in the near future.

“We launched jantarada.pt, together with @jpmgoncalves. It's a directory of some great Portuguese restaurants doing deliveries and take-out. We're hoping to help them get through this difficult period. For now we're covering Coimbra, Porto and Lisbon. 🍽️”
